15 Sep 2007 - FINTRAY WALKERS

Clachnaben & Mount Battock
A good turnout of 9 made the trip to Glen Dye for this walk. The forecast was not too good but we set off from the car park at 9am in dry conditions and were on the top of Clachnaben by 10:30 (see picture). The walk over to Mount Battock is made more interesting by the 'moonscape' nature of the land, peat hags and grey gravel in turn.

An early lunch was taken and it was just as well as the rain started when we got going again and lasted, quite heavily, for about an hour and a half.  By this time Mount Battcok had been summited and we were on our way down to Glen Dye. A track on the map promised a shortcut down to the Valley below but this turned out to be a trackless traverse of a hillside with deep heather and many hidden holes, one of which we almost lost one of the party down. Another member took a fair amount of peat home inside his boot after stepping into a bog as well. Apologies must also go the Mannofield Hillwalkers who followed us on this adventure !!!

By mid afternoon the weather had improved and in fairly pleasant conditions we reached Charr Bothy for a very late lunch, and an entry into the Bothy book as well. The walk out was completed in just over an hour and it was back to the cars and Fintray by 5:30pm.
